About Kenya Library Association

The Kenya Library Association (KLA) was established in November 1973 after the precursor, East African Library Association (EALA), was dissolved. EALA was founded in 1956, comprising Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania as members. A decision was made in 1964 that each country should form a National Association but become a member of EALA. EALA was consequently dissolved in 1972.

The famous Hockey report by S.W Hockey made recommendations, notably for establishing the East Africa School of Librarianship in Makerere, Uganda. The report highlighted the importance of graduate librarians and the feasibility of developing librarianship as an academic discipline. The Rockefeller Foundation and UNESCO provided support.

KLA grew as a National Library Association and inaugurated its official Journal, Maktaba, published annually.
